Our Priorities

  • Safety First – We respect and care about people, so we put the avoidance of life-changing risks above everything else.

  • Sustainability – Our respect and concern for life-changing risks extends to the whole environment. Last century, we were among the first businesses in London to commit to avoiding any practices or use of resources that might contribute to environmental damage. We source all our supplies sustainably. In particular, we do not use Tuna and we purchase all our electricity from renewable sources.

  • Mental Health, the avoidance of avoidable stress and our “no-blame” culture – During lockdown, we had plenty of time to reflect and it was obvious that Mental Health is a high priority. Sadly, statistics show that the actual harm from mental health exceeds harm from physical risks by a factor of about 40. Mental Health is not a luxury.

Accordingly, it is now our explicit policy to avoid all avoidable workplace stress. When the restaurant is really busy, there is a certain amount of unavoidable stress; however, this is not usually the source of mental anguish. The kind of stress we want to avoid is more to do with human relations: things like bullying, harassment, discrimination and blame.

We have always been aware that when we hide our mistakes, there is no opportunity to learn from them and so we keep making the same mistakes over and over again. (Also, when mistakes are hidden, they can be vastly more damaging.)

Since reopening after lockdown, we have formally adopted the concept of a ‘no-blame culture’. We welcome honesty about mistakes: although they can be embarrassing, we try not to beat ourselves up when we make them.

This policy does not mean that it’s a free-for-all with no consequences: if anything, it means that we all have to take on greater responsibility, not less. The company still has formal boundaries as to what constitutes acceptable behaviour, and we actively encourage discussion throughout the company in agreeing where to set such boundaries.

When such boundaries are crossed, we believe that we are more likely to avoid unacceptable behaviour next time if we emphasise finding out the underlying cause rather than trying to find out who is to blame.

It usually takes a week or two to get used to our no-blame culture, but most people find that it forms the basis of some really worthwhile, friendly, trustworthy relationships at work.

Naturally, we’re not perfect; but it is rare for anything really unpleasant to occur at Tokyo Diner.

That’s why we call it a friendly, fuss-free, family firm.
